A Study on Privacy of Government Employees in Digital Era in India
Abstract
The privacy challenges are faced by government employees in India in the rapidly growing digital era. With the mandatory use of biometric attendance systems, digital HR portals, surveillance tools (installation of Cameras in every Office), and electronic communication platforms like every official message forwarded through e mail or WhatsApp, significant amounts of personal data are collected and processed within government departments and a major concern is that ADHAR is mandatory to attach at various platforms. The researcher analyses the legal and policy frameworks governing employee privacy, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, the IT Act, and relevant judicial interpretations. It also highlights gaps in data security, lack of employees’ awareness, and carelessness in the implementation of privacy safeguards. Through a review of literature, policy documents, and expert perspectives, the study identifies key risks such as excessive monitoring, data misuse, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The findings emphasize the need for stronger data governance, improved cybersecurity measures, transparent digital practices, and greater sensitization among employees. Overall, the study contributes to understanding how privacy can be better protected in India’s digital government workplaces.
