Design and Fabrication of a Signet Ring as a Souvenir for Graduating Students of AsanSka University College of Design and Technology
Abstract
This study examined how a signet ring can be designed and made as a graduation souvenir for the students of AsanSka University College of Design and Technology. The study handled the contextual gap in graduation souvenirs within the institution where students did not get any significant gifts in order to remind them about their academic achievements. The research design was a qualitative research design, which used studio-based descriptive research methods and research technique of exploration. Data were collected by interviews (unstructured interviews with students and lecturers), and firsthand observation of fabrication processes. The production of the ring used with the traditional and contemporary jewellery making techniques including annealing, pickling, milling, piercing, soldering and finishing. The results showed that the graduating students wanted to get personalised souvenirs to remember their learning experience and the institution they belong to. The research established that signet rings can be used as permanent reminders when correctly planned and made to remind students of the institution and make them feel that they belong to it. The study adds to the comprehension of the way in which the traditional craft methods may be utilized to produce significant modern commemoration items in educational settings.
